Abstract:
De-interlacing is effected by determining the motion at each missing pixel and, then, interpolating the missing lines to convert an interlaced field to a progressive frame. The interpolation employed for luminance is determined through motion detection. If motion is detected in the image field based interpolation is used and if no motion of the image is detected frame interpolation is used. Specifically, the interpolation is determined by employing a motion metric. The motion metric at a missing pixel is defined by using a prescribed combination of pixel luminance value differences. A spatial median filter is then used to remove objectionable noise from the pixel luminance value differences and to fill in so-called “holes” in the image. Indeed, the spatial median filter can be considered as providing a measure of the overall effect of all pixels that make up the object of the image.

Abstract:
Color space conversion from a first image definition scheme to a second image definition scheme is realized by utilizing only one step of matrix multiplication and by determining whether determined RGB values are in a valid RGB region and, if not, generating a first modification factor to bring the RGB vector onto or in close proximity to the boundary of the valid RGB region. Then, the first modification factor is employed to modify in a prescribed manner the converted chroma values. In a specific embodiment of the invention, only a single matrix multiplication is employed and the otherwise additional required multiplication and/or division steps are realized by additions and/or subtractions and by employing a prescribed iterative process to bring the RGB values into or close to the valid RGB color space region. The converted chroma values are also modified by associated second modification factors also generated in the iteration process. In another specific embodiment of the invention, the converted chroma values are modified or not during an iteration depending upon whether a factor corresponding to and related to RG, Bis within a specific color space region or not. If RG, Bare within the specific color space region, the chroma values are modified by the associated second modification factors, the second modification factors are adjusted and the process is iterated. If RG, Bare other than within the specific color space region, the chroma values are not modified, the second modification factors are adjusted and the process is iterated. A prescribed number of iterations are used.

Abstract:
The present invention provides a password authentication security system for a telecommunications network having a plurality of user terminals or subscriber stations communicably coupled to the network. The system comprises a network control center coupled to the subscriber stations, to service provider stations and to network databases via the network. Upon establishment of a communication with a subscriber station, a network coupling identifier comprising in one embodiment the telephone number of the line to which the subscriber station is connected is detected at a telephone switching office and transmitted to the control center. If this is the first time communications have been established between the subscriber station and the network, the received telephone number is encrypted to produce a secret password that is then automatically transmitted to the subscriber station for storage in memory. Upon subsequent communications, the telephone number is again received by the control center where it is encrypted to produce a second password. The first password is then automatically retrieved from memory of the subscriber station independent of user interaction.

Abstract:
Techniques for employing a television set and a television set controller as the control interface for devices which themselves do not have display capability and for services provided via the telephone network. The techniques involve control apparatus which is connected to the telephone network and a television set and is responsive to inputs from a hand-held controller for the television set. The control apparatus outputs a screen which contains control selections to the television set and the user employs the controller to make a selection. The control apparatus then performs the control function specified by the selection. One application is a telephone messaging system: integral with the control apparatus is a system which can answer calls and store voice messages, fax messages, character-string messages, and script messages. The control apparatus plays the voice messages on the television set and provide screens to the television set which display the fax and character-string messages. The script messages contain code which the control apparatus executes to produce displays.
