Method And Apparatus For Tracking A Surgical Instrument During Surgery

View page
US Patent:
7824328, Nov 2, 2010
Filed:
Sep 18, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/523134
Inventors:
Abhishek Gattani - San Jose CA, US
Salmaan Hameed - San Jose CA, US
Assignee:
Stryker Corporation - Kalamazoo MI
International Classification:
A61B 1/005
A61B 1/00
US Classification:
600117, 600145, 600182, 600424
Abstract:
An endoscopic surgical navigation system comprises a tracking subsystem to capture data representing positions and orientations of a flexible endoscope during an endoscopic procedure, to allow coregistration of live endoscopic video with intra-operative and/or pre-operative scan images. Positions and orientations of the endoscope are detected using one or more sensors and/or other signal-producing elements disposed on the endoscope. The sensors include optical curvature sensors located along the endoscope, where the length of each optical curvature sensor decreases with increasing proximity to the distal end of the endoscope. Output signals of the sensors can be routed to the tracking subsystem through the light channel in the endoscope. A hybrid approach can be used to separately track the position and orientation of the (rigid) base and the flexible portion of the endoscope.

A61B 1/04
US Classification:
600424, 600411, 600427, 600117
Abstract:
An endoscopic surgical navigation system comprises a path correlation module that can compute the path taken by an endoscope scope or other medical instrument during an endoscopic medical procedure and various related attributes and parameters, and can compute and display a correlation between two paths.

System And Method For Determining An Optimal Surgical Trajectory

View page
US Patent:
8116847, Feb 14, 2012
Filed:
Oct 19, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/583295
Inventors:
Abhishek Gattani - San Jose CA, US
Salmaan Hameed - San Jose CA, US
Assignee:
Stryker Corporation - Kalamazoo MI
International Classification:
A61B 8/00
US Classification:
600424, 382131, 382132, 378 4
Abstract:
A method and corresponding system for calculating an optimum surgical trajectory or path for displacing a surgical instrument through the interior of the body of a patient. Upon obtaining a volumetric scan of a patient, such as a CT scan, the surgeon can identify and assign weight values indicating a preference on whether an anatomical area be utilized in plotting an optimum instrument trajectory. Upon providing a starting and destination point for a surgical instrument, an optimum surgical trajectory can be determined in essentially real time and graphically presented to the surgeon by superimposing the proposed trajectory upon the patient's volumetric scan. Furthermore, the system and method is interactive, allowing the surgeon to deviate from the proposed optimum path if desired and choose another path. In response, the system will determine and present, in essentially real time, a new optimum trajectory based on the current location of the surgical instrument.

A61M 31/00
A61M 25/00
US Classification:
604 26, 604506, 604264
Abstract:
An apparatus to provide a regulated pressurized gas for introduction into the body of a patient during a medical procedure comprises an internal flow path through which to convey the pressurized gas, a regulator in the flow path to regulate the pressurized gas, and a biosensor to detect a body substance entering or in proximity to the flow path.

Visual Navigation System For Endoscopic Surgery

View page
US Patent:
8248413, Aug 21, 2012
Filed:
Sep 18, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/523216
Inventors:
Abhishek Gattani - San Jose CA, US
Amit Mahadik - San Jose CA, US
Salmaan Hameed - San Jose CA, US
Assignee:
Stryker Corporation - Kalamazoo MI
International Classification:
G06T 17/00
G06T 15/00
G09G 5/00
A61B 1/00
A61B 5/05
US Classification:
345424, 345419, 345420, 345581, 345619, 345629, 600117, 600118, 600119, 600424, 600425
Abstract:
An endoscopic surgical navigation system comprises a data acquisition subsystem, a tracking subsystem, a registration subsystem, a data processing subsystem and a user interface subsystem. The data acquisition subsystem inputs intra-operative scan data from a medical scanning device during an endoscopic procedure. The tracking subsystem captures data representing positions and orientations of a flexible endoscope during the endoscopic procedure. The registration subsystem determines transformation parameters for coregistering the intra-operative scan data and the data indicative of positions and orientations of the endoscope. The data processing subsystem coregisters the intra-operative scan data and the data indicative of positions and orientations of the endoscope based on the transformation parameters and generates real-time image data representing 3D internal views of a body that are coregistered with live video from an endoscopic video camera. The user interface subsystem receives input from a user for controlling the system and provides output to the user.

Multi-Dimensional Navigation Of Endoscopic Video
