A tearful Willie Jackson expressed disbelief at his actions, according to a recording of the 911 call. He asked the 911 dispatcher whether he could keep his grandfather's ID with him. He also told the dispatcher he was "completely sober" when he stabbed Hap Jackson but started drinking vodka afterwa
"There was no major argument, it just felt like something I wanted to do, I did it," Willie Jackson said. When asked whether his grandfather still was alive, Willie Jackson sounded hopeful that he might be.
However, Willie Jackson said he resumed stabbing his grandfather, who began fighting back, according to court documents. Investigators noted that Willie Jackson started to "choke up" at this point in the interview and said he "wanted it to be over," so he stabbed Hap Jackson again.
Chief Deputy Prosecutor Chad Enright said his impression from the investigation is that Willie Jackson had researched Gov. Jay Inslee's moratorium on executions because Willie Jackson did not want to be executed after he killed his grandfather.
