There is provided a method and system for initiating an information transmission, such as with faxing, e-mail, data streaming, or the like from a personal computer on a network having at least one networked multifunction machine. The method comprises the steps of invoking a fax command from a software program on a personal computer and then viewing a list of machines residing on the network which contain local address book information. Upon viewing the list, a machine is selected from the list and a search is conducted through the personal computer for a local copy of the selected machine's address book information. If no local copy exists, a local copy of the selected machine's address book information is created on the personal computer. The local copy of the selected machine's address book is then used to retrieve address book information for selecting a recipient of an information transmission.

The present invention is directed to a method and system for a printer driver to retrieve information from a printer mapped to a printer server. A printer driver residing on a client machine searches for all printers accessible by the client machine. A user is then prompted to select one of the printers discovered. The client machine then stores the printer IP address and the printer network path information in the registry. The actual port of the discovered printer is then ascertained using the information garnished from the printer server and the information stored in the client machine registry. The printer driver then communicates directly with the printer using the printer IP address and the network path. The system of the present invention utilizes two software components for searching and storing the printer IP address and the printer network path.

The subject application is directed to a mobile document processing system and method. A request for a transient address corresponding to mobile document processing operations is first received from an associated user. Upon receipt of the request, a transient address is generated corresponding to the associated user. Transient address data is then generated for routing electronic documents in accordance with a received document processing request. A document processing request is then received corresponding to a request for the performance of processing of at least one electronic document. The at least one electronic document is then routed to an associated document processing device, data storage device, or facsimile device corresponding to the transient address. The associated document processing device, data storage device, or facsimile device then commences a document processing operation according to the received document processing request. Upon the occurrence of a selected event, the transient address is deleted.

A first computer program residing on a controller, which acts to monitor the printer configuration, is activated. The printer configuration is read from the controller configuration and updates the DEVMODE data. The detection of a change in any attribute of the printer configuration causes a second program to activate. DEVMODE data is updated using a data layout described in an XML file. The data layout in the XML file will be packaged with the controller during building, as well as available on a CD-ROM, other portable device, or stored on a central location and accessed over a computer network for the updating printer drivers on the controller when new versions are released. The second program retrieves current printer configuration data using SNMP communications and writes this data to the registry. The registry is then updated by the second computer program using to account for the changes detected by the first computer program in accordance with the data layout of the XML file.
