Abstract:
Systems, methods, and other embodiments associated with gated optical coherence tomography (OCT) are described. One example method includes generating an image control signal to control an OCT apparatus to acquire an image of an embryonic heart at a specified point in time during a cardiac cycle of the embryonic heart. The method may also include controlling the OCT apparatus to acquire the image based on the image control signal. In different examples, the image may be acquired in vivo or from an excised heart that is paced. The OCT apparatus and the embryonic heart may be housed in an environmental chamber having a set of controllable environmental factors. Therefore, the method may include detecting and controlling the set of controllable environmental factors.

US Patent:
20140074176, Mar 13, 2014
Filed:
Sep 11, 2013
Appl. No.:
14/024544
Inventors:
Michael W. Jenkins - Cleveland OH, US
Hillel J. Chiel - University Heights OH, US
Assignee:
Case Western Reserve University - Cleveland OH
Vanderbilt University - Nashville TN
International Classification:
A61N 5/06
A61N 1/32
US Classification:
607 3, 607 88
Abstract:
In one aspect of the present invention, a method of transient and selective suppression of neural activities of a target of interest, such as one or more nerves, includes selectively applying at least one light to the target of interest at selected locations with predetermined radiant exposures to create a localized and selective inhibitory response therein. The localized and selective inhibitory response comprises a local temperature change.

Microscopy With Ultraviolet Surface Excitation (Muse) Imaging Implemented On A Mobile Device

View page
US Patent:
20220283421, Sep 8, 2022
Filed:
Jul 16, 2020
Appl. No.:
17/626266
Inventors:
- Cleveland OH, US
Michael JENKINS - Cleveland OH, US
International Classification:
G02B 21/16
G01N 21/64
G02B 21/36
Abstract:
A external accessory can allow a mobile device to perform microscopy imaging with Type-C ultraviolet (UVC) light excitation. The external accessory includes a compound lens placed in front of a camera lens of the mobile device. A light transparent optical window configured to be placed in front of the compound lens and positioned such that a front surface of the optical window overlaps the front focal plane of the compound lens. One or more light emitting diode (LED) that emits UVC light positioned at one or more side-edges of the optical window. The one or more LED emits UVC light through the optical window so that the UVC light undergoes total internal reflection. An externally triggered LED driver configured to power and control the LED(s).

Methods For Microscopy With Ultraviolet Surface Excitation (Muse) Imaging

View page
US Patent:
20220268701, Aug 25, 2022
Filed:
Jul 16, 2020
Appl. No.:
17/626292
Inventors:
- Cleveland OH, US
Michael JENKINS - Cleveland OH, US
International Classification:
G01N 21/64
G02B 21/16
G02B 21/36
Abstract:
Described herein are methods for imaging a fluorescent bioassay (including a substrate, such as dispersed cellular sample, exposed to one or more exogenous fluorophore and/or fluorescent probe that accumulate in a structure of interest). The bioassay can be excited with Type-C ultraviolet (UVC) light produced by one or more light emitting diode (LED). The UVC can have a center wavelength that causes emission by the fluorescent bioassay. A digital optical device can collect a signal emitted from the fluorescent bioassay in response to the excitation. The methods relate in particular to Microscopy with Ultraviolet Surface Excitation (MUSE) imaging.

Systems And Methods For Improved Light-Sheet Microscopy

View page
US Patent:
20220269058, Aug 25, 2022
Filed:
Jul 16, 2020
Appl. No.:
17/626328
Inventors:
- Cleveland OH, US
Michael JENKINS - Cleveland OH, US
International Classification:
G02B 21/08
G01N 21/64
G02B 7/08
G02B 21/36
Abstract:
Described herein are systems and methods for improving light-sheet microscopy with cost-effective and simplified components. Such cost-effective and simplified components can be implemented in a light focusing system, a light generation system, and/or in imaging system. The light focusing system can be improved by attaching a voice coil motor to a focusing lens to increase the imagable field of view. The light generation system can be improved with a multimode laser diode to increase the uniformity of the beam profile and to increase the usable optical power. The imaging system can be improved by using a fluid chamber with positive cylindrical optical window for minimizing spherical aberrations.

Targeting Small-Diameter Axons For Neuromodulation

View page
US Patent:
20210128913, May 6, 2021
Filed:
Apr 16, 2018
Appl. No.:
16/605026
Inventors:
- Cleveland OH, US
- Nashville TN, US
- Pittsburgh PA, US
Hillel J. Chiel - Cleveland OH, US
Michael W. Jenkins - Cleveland OH, US
Charles C. Horn - Pittsburgh PA, US
International Classification:
A61N 1/36
A61N 5/06
A61N 7/00
Abstract:
Small-diameter axons can be targeted for neuromodulation. A nerve modulating therapy can be configured to target the small diameter axons in a target area of a subject specifically. The nerve modulating therapy can be applied to the target area to modulate conduction in one or more small diameter axons within the target area to a greater degree than in large diameter axons within the target area. The nerve modulating therapy can be any therapy that affects an outer surface of the one or more small diameter axons (like a heat signal, a pressure wave, an optogenetic manipulation, and/or a pharmaceutical dosage).

Phase-Decorrelation Optical Coherence Tomography-Based Parameter Measurement

View page
US Patent:
20180211383, Jul 26, 2018
Filed:
Jan 24, 2018
Appl. No.:
15/879312
Inventors:
- Cleveland OH, US
Brecken Blackburn - Cleveland OH, US
Michael Jenkins - Beachwood OH, US
Shi Gu - Cleveland OH, US
BJ Dupps - Cleveland OH, US
International Classification:
G06T 7/00
A61B 3/10
A61B 5/00
Abstract:
One example includes a scanning system. The system includes a phase-decorrelation optical coherence tomography (PhD-OCT) scanner configured to implement a scanning sequence via an optical signal on a sample medium. The system also includes a scanning controller configured to provide control signals to the PhD-OCT scanner to implement the scanning sequence and to obtain phase and amplitude information associated with a reflected version of the optical signal. The phase and amplitude information can be indicative of microscale dynamics of the sample medium. The scanning controller can also implement an algorithm to calculate a quantitative parameter of the sample medium based on the phase and amplitude information associated with the sample medium.
