Multi-Function Coding Element And An Associated Telecommunications Network

View page
US Patent:
6453175, Sep 17, 2002
Filed:
Mar 14, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/808479
Inventors:
Jerry L. Mizell - Plano TX
David Lauson - Allen TX
Kent Fisher - Dallas TX
Larry D. Lewis - Garland TX
Assignee:
Nortel Networks Limited - St. Laurent
International Classification:
H04B 138
US Classification:
455560, 455556, 455557, 375222
Abstract:
A wireless telecommunications network includes a base station controller which includes a call control resource manager and a multi-function coding element embodied within a DSP and comprised of first, second and third coding resources, each embodied as a software module, for respectively performing D/A and A/D on voice, facsimile and data messages. When transferring messages from a mobile terminal to an MSC via the base station controller, the mobile terminal first informs the base station controller whether the message is a voice, facsimile or data message. The mobile terminal then transfers the message to the call control resource manager residing within the base station controller. Based upon the indicated message type, the call control resource manager selects, from the first, second and third coding resources, a resource for performing a D/A conversion of the message received from the mobile terminal. After the selected resource performs the D/A conversion of the received message, the call control resource manager transfers the converted message to the MSC. Conversely, when transferring messages from the MSC to a selected mobile terminal via the base station controller, the MSC informs the base station controller whether the message is a voice, facsimile or data message.

Multiple Technology Vocoder And An Associated Telecommunications Network

View page
US Patent:
6542486, Apr 1, 2003
Filed:
Dec 22, 1998
Appl. No.:
09/218985
Inventors:
Larry D. Lewis - Garland TX
Jerry L. Mizell - Plano TX
Assignee:
Nortel Networks Limited - St. Laurent
International Classification:
H04B 7216
US Classification:
370335, 370465
Abstract:
A wireless telecommunications network includes a base station controller which, in turn, is comprised of a call control resource manager and a multiple technology vocoder having first and second interfaces, first and second selection managers, a vocoder controller and first, second, third, fourth and fifth resources, each embodied as a software module, for performing D/A and A/D conversions on messages configured in accordance with EVRC, EFRC, RLP, VSELP and QCELP protocols, respectively. When transferring messages between a mobile terminal and an MSC via the base station controller, the mobile terminal first informs the call control resource manager of the protocol to which the message conforms. In turn, the call control resource manager advises of the vocoder controller of the protocol type for the incoming message. The vocoder controller configures the interfaces to accept messages formatted in the protocol and instructs the selection managers to provide a path, for the received message, to the appropriate resource for conversion.

Method And System In A Wireless Communications Network For The Simultaneous Transmission Of Both Voice And Non-Voice Data Over A Single Radio Frequency Channel

View page
US Patent:
6847821, Jan 25, 2005
Filed:
Sep 14, 1998
Appl. No.:
09/152759
Inventors:
Larry DeWayne Lewis - Garland TX, US
Jerry Louis Mezell - Plano TX, US
Assignee:
Nortel Networks Limited - St. Laurent
International Classification:
H04Q 720
H04J 322
US Classification:
4554522, 455436, 370337, 370347, 370442, 370458, 370468, 370498
Abstract:
A method and system in a wireless communications network for the simultaneous transmission of voice and non-voice data over a single dedicated radio frequency channel to a mobile unit having a primary transmission bandwidth. Initially, voice data are transmitted to a mobile unit via a primary time interval within a single dedicated radio frequency channel. An unoccupied secondary time interval available to the mobile unit is then identified. Thereafter, non-voice data are transmitted to the mobile unit via the secondary time interval, in response to identifying the secondary time interval. The primary transmission bandwidth of the mobile unit is next automatically broadened to encompass both the primary time interval and the secondary time interval. Finally, the primary time interval and the secondary time interval are linked within the single dedicated radio frequency channel to permit the subsequent processing of the voice and non-voice data as a single transmitted unit over the single dedicated radio frequency channel. In identifying an unoccupied secondary time interval available to the mobile unit, time intervals positioned adjacent the primary time interval are examined to determine occupancy.

Identifying And Controlling Network Sessions Via An Access Concentration Point

View page
US Patent:
8364807, Jan 29, 2013
Filed:
Nov 18, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/991791
Inventors:
Larry DeWayne Lewis - Plano TX, US
Assignee:
Rockstar Consortium US LP - Plano TX
International Classification:
G06F 15/173
US Classification:
709224, 709227, 709223, 709232, 709249, 709206
Abstract:
The present invention facilitates identification and control of peer-to-peer sessions via an access concentration point (ACP). The ACP will monitor packets routed therethrough and detect access messages intended for known peer-to-peer access services. The access messages sent from a communication client to the peer-to-peer access service, which will respond by sending an access reply message back to the communication client. The ACP will monitor the packets being routed to identify the access reply message, which will include routing addresses that may be associated with potential remote communication clients. With these addresses, the ACP can monitor packets to identify when an attempt to initiate a peer-to-peer communication session is being made to or through an entity associated with one or more of these addresses. Upon detecting a session initiation message to or through an identified address, the ACP may take any number of actions, depending on how the ACP is configured.

US Patent:
8477605, Jul 2, 2013
Filed:
Sep 29, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/954049
Inventors:
Stephen Bennett Elliott - Allen TX, US
Larry DeWayne Lewis - Plano TX, US
Assignee:
Rockstar Consortium US LP - Plano TX
International Classification:
G06F 11/00
US Classification:
370230, 370229, 370231, 370232, 3703952, 37039521
Abstract:
The present invention inspects packets to identify session initiation messages associated with select applications. A session initiation message may be any message used to initiate a communication session with another communication client. Once a session initiation message from a select application is identified, the intended communication session may be identified, monitored, prevented, or otherwise processed in a predefined manner. These select applications may be illicit applications from which communication sessions are actually or potentially unlawful or otherwise improper. The illicit communication sessions that the present invention seeks to control may be used for voice communications as well as for transferring data and facilitating application collaboration, such as is used in video conferencing or file sharing. The session initiation messages need not be received directly from the originating communication client for inspection. Packet inspections may take place at any location, such as aggregation points throughout the packet networks.
