Optical Novelty Filter

View page
US Patent:
47737190, Sep 27, 1988
Filed:
Jul 30, 1987
Appl. No.:
7/079800
Inventors:
Dana Z. Anderson - Boulder CO
Jack L. Feinberg - Manhattan Beach CA
International Classification:
G03H 102
G02B 2700
US Classification:
350 364
Abstract:
Changes in an image are detectable by a tracking novelty filter while an incorporated holographic medium is in disequilibrium. A suitably doped single-domain barium titanate crystal can serve as the holographic medium. Image information is imposed on a laser beam in the form of a spatially varying polarization across the beam cross section spatial position. The modulated beam is directed to the crystal, which cooperates with a polarizing beam splitter and a half wave plate to define a polarization conjugator. The conjugated beam is passed through the modulator a second time and then operated on by a beam splitter. When the crystal is in equilibrium with the incident laser light, the beam splitter directs minimal light to a detector. However, when an image change causes a change in the applied modulation, the changed image elements are intensified at the detector while the holographic medium is in disequilibrium. In alternative embodiments, phase is the variable modulated.

Method For Forming A Bragg Grating In An Optical Medium

View page
US Patent:
53275152, Jul 5, 1994
Filed:
Jan 14, 1993
Appl. No.:
8/004770
Inventors:
Dana Z. Anderson - Boulder CO
Turan Erdogan - Berkeley Heights NJ
Victor Mizrahi - Bedminster NJ
Assignee:
AT&T Laboratories - Murray Hill NJ
International Classification:
G02B 610
US Classification:
385123
Abstract:
The invention involves a method for making Bragg gratings in glass optical fibers, or other glass optical waveguides, which is relatively insensitive to perturbations in the actinic light used for processing. This method is suitable for mass production and lends itself well to the manufacturing environment. The invention method involves first providing an optical phase grating. An interference pattern is generated by impinging a single light beam on the grating. The optical waveguide to be processed is exposed to this interference pattern, leading to the formation of a Bragg grating in the waveguide.

Strain Measuring Apparatus/Method Having A Sensor And A Reference Optical Fiber Grating

View page
US Patent:
58899014, Mar 30, 1999
Filed:
Jun 6, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/870533
Inventors:
Dana Zachary Anderson - Boulder CO
William Charles Swann - Lafayette CO
Assignee:
University Technology Corporation - Boulder CO
International Classification:
G02B 600
US Classification:
385 12
Abstract:
A condition sensing apparatus/method includes a sensor-fiber-grating that is subjected to a physical condition or measurand (strain/temperature/pressure) that is to be sensed. A broad-band light beam is directed into the core of the sensor grating, and the constructive-interference light beam that is reflected from this sensor grating is directed into a reference-fiber-grating. The reference grating is subjected to a servo-controlled elongation force or strain, and in this manner the length of the reference grating is varied until the reference grating operates to reflect a maximum intensity of its received light beam, and to transmit a minimum intensity of its received light beam. This maximum/minimum condition of the reference grating is sensed by detecting the minimum intensity of a light beam that is transmitted through the reference grating. The physical strain of the reference grating at which this condition occurs is used as a measure of the measurand to which the sensor grating is subjected.

Isotropic Nonplanar Ring Laser

View page
US Patent:
42478324, Jan 27, 1981
Filed:
Dec 26, 1978
Appl. No.:
5/973096
Inventors:
Virgil E. Sanders - Newbury Park CA
Dana Z. Anderson - Tucson AZ
Assignee:
Litton Systems, Inc. - Beverly Hills CA
International Classification:
H01S 3101
US Classification:
331 945C
Abstract:
A nonplanar ring laser for use as a laser gyro includes an even number of at least six reflecting surfaces which are preferably all made from the same coating batch or coating run so that they have substantially the same anisotropy characteristics. The mirrors are divided into pairs of mirrors, and the mirrors in at least each pair must match in their anisotropic characteristics. Note that the matched mirrors need only be in the laser path but not necessarily adjacent. The nonplanar geometric arrangement of the reflecting surfaces is such that the reflecting plane of incidence of each mirror is at substantially a right angle to the reflecting plane of incidence of at least one of the adjacent mirrors in the laser path. Note that the reflecting plane of incidence of each mirror may optionally be at right angles to the reflecting planes of incidence of both its adjacent mirrors in the laser path. The angles of incidence of the mirrors in each matched pair must be substantially the same.

Method And Apparatus For Photorefractive Pirouette Display And Processing Of Analog Signals

View page
US Patent:
56128126, Mar 18, 1997
Filed:
Aug 31, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/521680
Inventors:
Gan Zhou - Pasadena CA
Dana Z. Anderson - Boulder CO
Assignee:
The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Air
Force - Washington DC
International Classification:
G02F 103
G03H 110
US Classification:
359244
Abstract:
A photorefractive pirouette display device can produce the sonogram of speech sounds by incorporating the short-time Fourier spectrum of speech waves as the input. The device requires a coherent source of optical radiation which can be obtained for a variety of different lasers. A photorefractive circuit is used to display a time-dependent signal, beam. An analog signal is imposed on the beam as temporal modulations on its intensity and/or phase, the pump beam is a plane wave constant amplitude. The signal beam interferes with the pump beam in the photorefractive crystal, the resultant intensity modulation pattern nonuniformly excites the charge carriers in the crystal. The excited charge carrier migrate in the crystal to form a microscope electric field, which produces an index grating in the crystal due to the Pockels effect. The crystal is rotating continually with angular velocity. The pump beam diffracts off of the holographic grating and reconstructs the signal beam.

Optically Differentiating And Adding Passive Ring Laser Gyroscope

View page
US Patent:
49232991, May 8, 1990
Filed:
Aug 9, 1988
Appl. No.:
7/230020
Inventors:
Dana Z. Anderson - Boulder CO
Nicholas Sampas - Boulder CO
Assignee:
University of Colorado Foundation, Inc. - Boulder CO
International Classification:
G01C 1964
US Classification:
356350
Abstract:
Disclosed herein is an improved passive ring laser gyroscope with two systems: common mode and differential mode error systems. The common mode error system modulates counter propagating coherent radiation. The modulated light from a common source is split at a beam splitter before the reasonator cavity and then optically recombined at the same beam splitter for further propagation to an electronic detecting and demodulation servo system. The resulting electronic error signal is used to adjust the ring resonator and the laser so that the frequency output of the coherent radiation of the laser is substantially equal to the resonance frequency of the ring resonator. The differential mode error system optically substracts counter propagating radiation signals emanating from the resonator cavity to form a differential error signal that is detectable by an electronic detector for further processing by demodulation. This output signal is used to servo and drive acousto-optic modulating frequency shifters, one for each counter propagating radiation of the ring resonator. The difference between the frequencies at which the acousto-optic modulators are driven is made equal to the difference between the frequencies of the counter propagating radiation of the ring resonator.
