A room air conditioner is provided having an evaporator coil located in a front part of the room air conditioner, a condenser coil located in a back part of the room air conditioner, and a wall separating the front part from the back part. The wall prevents a free flow of air between the front part and the back part. A portion of the wall, extending less than a full width of the air conditioner, is formed of metal. An air moving device positioned in the front part creates an air stream flowing through the evaporator coil and out through an air outlet in a front grill of the air conditioner. An air housing surrounds at least a portion of the air moving device and forms an air flow path in the air conditioner, the air housing forming at least a part of the wall. The metal portion of the wall is mounted to the room air conditioner independently of the air housing.

A mounting system is provided for mounting an air conditioner on the exterior of a building adjacent to a window with an opening defined by a window frame having a lower sill and a height to an upper horizontal frame member. The air conditioner includes a main cabinet and a removable air duct. The mounting system includes two mounting arms, each arm being attached at a first point to a wall of the main cabinet and at a second point being engaged to the frame of the window. The main cabinet is suspended from the two mounting arms such that when mounted, a top surface of the main cabinet is positioned at a height of no more than 10% of the height of the window opening above the sill. The mounting system may provide support for the air conditioner at three points, namely, the sill of the window, an inside casing of the window and an exterior surface of the building, without requiring any fasteners to be driven into any of these points.

A plurality of adjustable louver assemblies are provided for a room air conditioner. Each louver assembly has a box-like housing which receives a plurality of horizontal and vertical louvers. Each set of horizontal and vertical louvers are linked so as to move in tandem An actuator wheel is rotatably attached to the housing and is engaged with one of the louvers of the upstream set of louvers such that rotation of the actuator will result in pivoting of the louvers. At least one of the sets of louvers is completely pivotable to a closed position so as to eject air more forcefully from the remaining open louver assemblies of the air conditioner.

A control circuit for a cool/heat pump in which two separate motors are utilized, each with a main winding and an auxiliary winding. A single dual rated capacitor is provided in series with both auxiliary windings. A selectively operative switch, which may be in the form of a thermostat, is provided in series between one of the alternating current lines and the windings of one of the motors to selectively terminate power to that motor while maintaining power to both windings of the other motor. The switch is also used to alternately energize an electric heater unit when the motor power is terminated. Such a control circuit avoids a de-icing operation normally required with cool/heat pumps working in a heating mode, when the outdoor temperature is below freezing.
